Budget vs Mid-Range vs Premium

Budget

$200 - $500

Flotec, Wayne

Good for standard wells under 200 feet, basic applications, and cost-conscious homeowners. Shorter warranties (2-3 years). Widely available at retail stores. Adequate for most residential needs if the well is not particularly demanding.

Mid-Range

$500 - $800

Franklin Electric, Goulds

The sweet spot for most homeowners. Professional-grade reliability with 5-year warranties. Stocked by most contractors. Better corrosion resistance and motor longevity than budget brands. This is what most well service companies install.

Premium

$800 - $1,500

Grundfos, Goulds high-end

Highest efficiency, longest lifespan, best constant pressure technology. Grundfos SQE is the gold standard for variable-speed pumps. Worth the premium for deep wells, hard water, or homeowners who want the best long-term value. Warranties up to 7 years.

What Your Installer Will Recommend

Most well service companies stock Franklin Electric or Goulds because these brands are reliable, widely available from distributors, and have good contractor support. Your installer will most likely recommend one of these two brands. That is fine for most situations.

If you want a specific brand (especially Grundfos), mention it when scheduling the appointment. Not all contractors stock Grundfos pumps, and ordering one may add a day or two to the timeline. If you are in an emergency (no water), take whatever your contractor has on the truck. You do not want to wait three days for a specific brand when you have no water.

If you plan to supply the pump yourself (which can save $150 to $500 on markup), confirm the exact model number and wire configuration with your installer before purchasing. The wrong pump is worse than no pump. See our cost-saving guide for details on the supply-your-own-pump strategy.

Where to Buy

Plumbing Supply Houses

Best prices for mid-range and premium brands. Carry Franklin, Goulds, and sometimes Grundfos. Staff can help with model selection. May require a contractor account for best pricing, but most are open to homeowners.

Home Depot / Lowes

Primarily stock Flotec and Wayne. Convenient but limited selection. Good for jet pumps and standard submersibles. Prices are retail (not contractor pricing). Returns are easier if the model does not fit.

Online Retailers

Amazon, SupplyHouse.com, and specialty pump retailers. Widest selection including all brands. Competitive pricing. Shipping is the main concern: pumps are heavy and shipping damage is possible. Verify the exact model and wire configuration before ordering.
